Saving the Bay - Save the Bay Turns the Tide

Saving the Bay - Save the Bay Beginnings
In the 1950s, few people questioned what was seen as "progress:" the steady filling and development of San Francisco Bay. The focus of the conservation movement until that time has been on saving wilderness. Free Day 2
This cut, unlike the first one, is made out of only 5 shots, and could've been done in only 4 shots. I was aiming at simplicity here, and decided to stay on two shots of both actors as long as I could so that the audience could observe the actors' interaction uninterrupted by cuts. I started with a tighter shot, which focused our attention more on the female lead's emotions, and I cut to a wider shot when we had to see the geography of the blocking, e.g., where the actors go in the space, then came in tight again on both. This is an intimate scene, and in general, these types of scenes require closer shots to maintain that intimacy.Published 1 month ago

Free Day 1
In this edit version, I use the majority of shots that we filmed during the Free Day, and you can see a pretty conventional coverage of the scene: we start with a wide angle shot, which establishes the space and the room where the two characters are having the discussion, then we move into a tighter shot when the female lead announces the big news. Then we jump cut to her reaction shot again for emphasis on her reaction, then we cut to the husband's over-the-shoulder shot with a repetition of his line, again for yet another emphasis on the fact that he's having a hard time being thrilled by what she has just told him. This way the conflict in the scene between the two characters is crystallized and brought to the audience's attention, plain and simple. Then we go to another reaction shot on her which is also a two-shot. If you notice, I wanted every shot t o contain movement and be taken from the dolly, which was a challenge as it's difficult to always maintain the right speed, framing and rhythm, but it definitely works to add some unsettlement to the scene. Then we cut between a shot-reverse-shot of them at their second position, and we end on a longer pan between their faces. Again, I was looking for a lot of movement and motion throughout the scene. On to the next cut, which is much more minimalistic than this one...Published 1 month ago

KQED Climate Watch: Liz Keogh
Bakersfield Resident Liz Keogh uses toilet paper to explain her theory of how PG and E smart meters may have overcharged residents. Keogh is very energy-conscious, and has installed skylights and low-energy light bulbs in every room. But her PG and E bill for summer of 2009 spiked about 40% higher than the previous five year average. Keogh thinks that may be because smart meters record the same number of kilowatts using a different, metaphorically "faster spinning" system. PG and E disputes that claim, although it does say some older electricity meters may possibly have been "slowing down" and not recording energy use as efficiently as the new smart meters.Published 2 months ago

MATCHA: Shanghai Jazz
Dubbed the "boy Billie Holiday," Coco Zhao performs an intimate set of original works and Shanghai jazz favorites in conjunction with the special exhibition, Shanghai. Jazz thrived in Shanghai's colorful cabarets and dance halls during the '20s and '30s. Suppressed during the Cultural Revolution, it has enjoyed a renaissance thanks to a new generation of young jazz musicians. Zhao cross-pollinates Mandarin vocals with the distinct sounds of contemporary American jazz; a unique heritage (both parents were in traditional Chinese opera) is infused his with youthful interpretations.Published 4 months ago

We are The Quotidian
Once in awhile, a non-commercial project like ourselves have to go all NPR on you and bring out the charity pledge drive pitch. After all, The Quotidian accepts no payments for the work we do and we have no advertising whatsoever in any of our content – which leaves much of our costs up to viewers like you. We're looking to raise at least $5,000 in the next 60 days so we can continue to do our good deeds and help nonprofits help themselves – nobody ever said lookin' good was a cheap exercise. Can you support us with even a small donation? To show our gratitude, we'll be giving away DVDs, T-shirts, stickers, posters and even Flip cameras (yes, those) as well as crediting you on either our Web site or in an upcoming film! kickstarter.com/projects/hsingyihkai/the-quotidian-tells-the-stories-of-people-finding About us: The Quotidian is an ongoing video documentary series that focuses on people doing good for their communities as well as those who are affected by their work. Stories range from an individual taking personal initiative to improve the well-being of homeless people in his neighborhood to a local business that donates a percentage of sales to charity, for example. We aim to tell stories in the developmental stage – whether it's someone starting an innovative social program or a nonprofit pushing for widespread community action. The individuals and organizations we highlight are able to use our produced pieces for their own publicity and fundraising purposes since everything is produced under Creative Commons Share-Alike license and organizations have been successful in using our films effectively for publicity and fundraising purposes.Published 4 months ago

Dana from Web and Ian from Communications have disected the work bit by bit, annotating the connections and links that this art piece has with the world wide web. An innovative idea, pioneered by our friends at BSSP, we're hoping that in curating the internet we'll show how anything can be connected to art!Published 4 months ago

Zhang Jianjun Discusses His Work, Vestiges of a Process: Shanghai Garden" (2/2010)
Zhang Jianjun's work, "Vestiges of a Process: Shanghai Garden," is on view at the Asian Art Museum from February 5 - September 12, 2010. "Vestiges of a Process: Shanghai Garden" is situated closest to Lee Gallery the east side of North Court. It is an installation composed of two silicone rubber Taihu rocks, manufactured from molds of real Taihu rocks which in traditional garden culture are prized for providing city dwellers with a kind of symbolic access to nature. The rocks are accompanied by a silicone rubber vase. Together they are arrayed atop a pavement of gray antique bricks, acquired from the demolition of Shanghai houses constructed between 1923 and 1926. Visitors can walk between the rocks, reflecting on time and process.Published 6 months ago

Discovering Angel Island: The Story Behind the Poems
From 1910 to 1940, tens of thousands of immigrants entered the United States through the West Coast's Angel Island Immigration Station. Located in San Francisco's north bay, not far from Alcatraz Island, the buildings were nearly forgotten and their history practically lost, until one day Alexander Weiss, a California State Park Ranger, re-discovered them in 1970. His chance discovery began the long journey to save the Immigration Station, and ultimately, to save the stories hidden within it, and to help us remember its sad, but important role in American history.Published 6 months ago

In February 2009, a team of painters from Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center, a community mural organization based in San Franciscos Mission District, spent two full weeks painting in collaboration with Marshall. PI09: The Elders
A 2009 BAVC Producers Institute ProjectProject Director: Marc Boothe The Elders Project is a major cross-media project from B3Media in the UK that will engage inter-generational participants using a combination of photography, oral history, video, spoken word, text and interactive digital platforms to document and preserve the untold stories of the first generation of African-Caribbean settlers who came to Britain in the early 50's. The Elders Project will provide a voice to under-represented young people and elders both in the UK and the US, engaging new, transitional audiences with innovative ways to tell their stories. At the Institute, the B3 team designed a three-tiered model of both live physical and virtual spaces where participants experience and create content through a remix interface in the tradition of ‘call and response.' In this unique cultural mashup, the project manages to incorporate a major photographic museum exhibition, an online/virtual gallery, and an inter-generational social networking/storytelling platform with robust content management tools. Marc Boothe is the Executive Director of B3 Media, one of the UK's leading creative hubs for emerging black and minority ethnic artists and producers.Published 1 year ago

PI09: Deep Down
A 2009 BAVC Producers Institute ProjectProject Director: Jennifer Gilomen & Sally Rubin http://deepdownfilm.org To keep up with our increasing demand for energy, humankind is mining the earth for natural resources and putting communities worldwide at risk. Through an intimate, human story, the documentary Deep Down tells the story of a town deep in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky, where coal is king. Through an integrated media campaign that includes a podcast series disseminated through Appalachian Voices' "Most Endangered Mountains" Google Earth collection, educational curriculum and community action kits, Deep Down will have a deep impact with a diverse audience. At the Producers Institute, co-directors Jennifer Gilomen and Sally Rubin designed and built a3D Virtual Mine game in Second Life in order to bring the experience of mountaintop removal mining to a new level. Playing this game in the metaverse is intended to empower disenfranchised communities that now live in the shadows of extractive industries.Published 1 year ago

MATCHA: Japanese Tattoo at Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
MATCHA: Japanese Tattoo at Asian Art Museum of San Francisco There's more to getting inked than you think. Takahiro Kitamura -- aka "HORITAKA," apprentice to the revered master Horiyoshi III -- is an author, prolific tattoo artist, and owner of San Joses State of Grace. He will deliver a talk on the time-honored art of Japanese tattoos, a rich culture of beauty, commitment, and history. See LIVE demonstrations of employing both traditional (no electric needles!) and modern techniques. Joining Horitaka's diverse, talented crew of tattooists are special guests from Japan -- Shige, a powerhouse tat artist who's showcased all over the world; Mutsuo, who's designed for Bathing Ape and Hysteric Glamour; and Kazunobu Nagashima, a client of Shige who will proudly display his backpiece, which won a 2007 Milano Tattoo Convention award. In addition, dip into the world of Zen among ancient Samurai warriors through a guided tour of the galleries, learn about Japanese altars, sample teas by Ito En, soak up DJ Saiman's aural offerings, enjoy a cocktail with friends, and much more. www.asianart.org From: AsianArtMuseum Views: 61878 80 ratings Time: 07:11 More in EducationPublished 1 year ago

MATCHA: Tea & Spice at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
MATCHA: Tea & Spice at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco Still dusty from its annual trek to Burning Man, Tealchemy's Tea Temple will be erected inside the Asian Art Museum to participate in the museum's MATCHA program series. Everyone can sip earthy tea inside this mammoth atmospheric, communal space, which celebrates the centuries-old nomadic trade and travel of the Silk Routes. Elsewhere in the museum, taste teas from India, Persia, and Tibet (courtesy Samovar) or those along China's Tea and Horse Roads (courtesy Teance). Discover how these different blends are brewed and grind your own spicy chai (Indian tea), mortar and pestle style. Learn about tea and its cultural influences, see art of the spice routes on a guided tour, and view Power & Glory: Court Arts of China's Ming Dynasty before it closes (Sept. 21).
