The Gray Area studios have operated as a laboratory for its five artists in residence, fostering the creation of projects that overlap technology and traditional media. Using this collaborative workspace, the artists have created multi-disciplinary works that include immersive environments, digitally fabricated sculpture, kinetic paintings, audiovisual software/hardware, and other mixed media experiments. PROTOTYPE will be a dynamic group exhibition featuring a collection of individual and collaborative works created by our very first class of Resident Artists.

Baat Cheet with Monica Desai-Henderson
On December 10, 2011, ten Bay Area taste-makers give five-minute presentations about the impact of Indian culture and art on their creative work. From Bollywood to yoga, street food to poetry and art, South Asia has inspired creativity across the world. Speakers include: Pixar animator Sanjay Patel, poet and psychiatrist Ravi Chandra, artist Sita Kuratomi Bhaumik, LACMA curator Julie Romain, artist Ranu Mukherjee, musician Cory Combs, India West editor Lisa Tsering, contemporary art collector Dipti Mathur, yoga instructor Monica Desai Henderson, and music and dance professor Nalini Ghuman.

The Kiss is the story of Wilfred Funai, a quiet, unassuming office worker whose defence from the hostile treatment from co-workers is to hide inside a small, regimented world. One day, he witnesses an event where he will either remain isolated or respond to a crisis, perhaps even at risk to himself. Relocations
In this performance art video that explores issues of race, gender and sexuality from an Asian American perspective, Japanese American poet David Mura performs four of his pieces, which are presented as four scenes. In scene one, Mura tells the story of his grandfather who immigrated to America, was interned during WWII and later returned to live in Japan. In scene two, Mura portrays a gay Japanese American. In scene three, he relates the eyewitness account of the brutal murder of a Chinese American, Vincent Chin, in Detroit.
